When applying for a visitor visa to Canada, the decision is based almost entirely on the documents you submit. Most applicants from the UAE do not have an interview, so they never get the chance to explain themselves, and no visa officer sees their face. Instead, an IRCC officer opens your file, reads it within a few minutes, and makes up their mind. All the information you wish them to have must be included in the folder.
This is the full document list for UAE residents, in the order IRCC expects it, with the sections that most applications underbuild. Our Canada visa services from the UAE include a full file review before you submit.
What IRCC is actually deciding
The Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is intended for individuals who will leave Canada at the end of their authorized period of stay. The officer must be satisfied that this will happen, and they examine all the documents in your file to answer that question.
That is why applicants with large savings are rejected, while those with only a small amount are approved. Money shows whether or not you can afford the trip; it does not answer the second question. Your connections with the UAE answer the second question, and that’s where people underinvest.
The mandatory forms
• IMM 5257 – Form for applying for a Temporary Resident Visa. It has been completed digitally, validated, and the barcode page has been produced. Do not print, sign, and scan unless you are specifically instructed to do so.
• IMM 5645 – Family Information Form. List all family members, including those in Canada; omitting a relative in Canada is considered misrepresentation rather than an oversight.
• IMM 5257 Schedule 1, where applicable.
• IMM 5476 – Use of a representative, if an agency is filing on your behalf.
• An IRCC secure online account – applications from the UAE are submitted online, and the account is where you will receive your Biometric Instruction Letter and any document requests.
Identity and status documents for UAE residents
• Include the bio page of your passport and all the pages that have a visa or a stamp; scan them all since travel history serves as evidence.
• The residence visa for the UAE remains valid long after your planned travel dates.
• The Emirates ID on both sides.
• Two digital photographs that meet IRCC specifications.
• The marriage certificate and the birth certificates of the children should be provided if any members of the family are included.
Proof of funds: how much, how long, whose money
IRCC does not state a specific amount for visitors; instead, it asks for proof that you can afford the trip without working in Canada and that the money is yours.
• Six months’ worth of personal bank statements, stamped by your bank.
• Six months’ worth of salary slips.
• A certificate from your employer regarding your position, the date you joined, and your annual income.
• Evidence of any other assets – property title deeds, investment statements, fixed deposits.
• If another person is providing the funding, then you will need to submit their bank statements, a letter confirming that they are in fact funding the trip, and evidence of your relationship.
As with any visa application, a sudden increase in your funds just before you apply is a bad sign. If you obtained the money legitimately, include a one-line explanation in your letter of explanation and attach the evidence.
Proof of ties to the UAE – the section most applicants underbuild
That’s where a good file shows its value—you’re showing that your life is centered here and that there’s a particular thing you can go back to on a particular date.
• Employment letter stating your role, your length of service, your salary, your approved leave dates, and – critically – that your position is held for you and you are expected to return on a stated day.
• Labor contract copy.
• Tenancy contract or Ejari, or property title if you own it.
• Family in the UAE – your spouse’s and children’s residence visas and school enrolment letters for the children.
• Business documents if you are self-employed: trade license, MOA, VAT registration, and a note on who runs the business in your absence.
• Travel history – previous visas used and returned from, especially US, UK, Schengen or Australian visas.
The letter of explanation
You can upload a letter of explanation through IRCC, and this section is among the least used in the application form. The letter should be one page long and written in simple English, explaining who you are, what you do, why you are traveling, who will fund it, where you will stay, and what you are returning to.
Write it yourself and make it factual, without making appeals or offering abstract promises regarding your intentions, and without adding extra information; if there is anything unpleasant in your file—such as a previous refusal, a gap in employment, or a large deposit—mention it in a sentence rather than hoping that no one notices.
Invitation letters from family in Canada
An invitation letter helps, but it is not a guarantee, and a weak one can hurt. If a relative in Canada is inviting you, their letter should include their full name and status in Canada, their address and contact details, their relationship to you, the purpose and length of your visit, and whether they are providing accommodation or funding.
Attach a copy of your status document—such as a citizenship certificate, a permanent residence card, or a valid work or study permit—and also provide proof of your address. If you are financing the trip, attach your financial documents. Don’t forget about IMM 5645: if you have any relatives in Canada, you must declare them.
Biometrics: when, where, and how long they last
Most first-time applicants must provide biometrics. Once you submit your application and pay the fee, you will receive a letter with biometrics instructions, and you must go to a visa application center within that limited time frame. Since biometrics remain valid for ten years, if you provided them for a Canadian application within that time, you won’t need to provide them again.
The processing clock does not meaningfully start until your biometrics are in. Booking the appointment promptly is the single easiest way to shorten your timeline. We have written a practical guide to giving Canada visa biometrics in Dubai covering locations, what to bring, and what happens next.
Fees to budget for
| Item | Fee (CAD) | Notes |
| Visitor visa (single or multiple entry) | 100 per person | Family maximum applies for five or more. |
| Biometrics | 85 per person | 170 maximum per family applying together |
| Typical total per adult | 185 | Before any agency service fee |
Check the IRCC website to confirm current fees before paying, and remember that fees are non-refundable even if the visa is not granted.
Documents for children and for the Super Visa
For children, you will need their birth certificate, the passports and residence visas of both parents, a notarised consent letter if only one parent is traveling, and in some cases biometrics, depending on their age – it is necessary to check the current age threshold.
Where you are the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, the Super Visa is generally the better choice than the standard TRV since it permits longer stays each time you enter. However, it requires extra documentation, such as private Canadian medical insurance providing at least a certain level of coverage, a letter of financial support from your child or grandchild, and proof that they meet the minimum income requirement. If this situation applies to you, let us know from the beginning – it makes a difference to the entire application.
